Day Seventy-Two
One of the gems in the Glebe is the local Home Hardware store. They are active in supporting community events, have been around for a very long time, and are a source for a very wide array of services. Skate sharpening, window glass, housewares, washers, plumbing supplies, sleds the list goes on and on. I bought some moisturizer there on Sunday.

Day Seventy-One
In spite of the snow that was falling, I walked to work this morning. At the corner of Glebe Avenue and Bank Street I noticed this on a bench:
I don't know who Armando was but what a lovely tribute!

Day Sixty-Nine (Guest Post)
The following is a guest post written and photographed by my lovely wife.
One of my
favorite places to be in the Glebe (besides home of course) is the Third Avenue
Spa on Bank Street at Third Avenue. I
snapped this photo yesterday when I went to meet a friend for an evening out. That’s right, one of the estheticians who
works at Third Avenue Spa has become a friend because the women who work there
are AWESOME.
Just
walking in the door creates a sense of peace.
It smells amazing, the girls are incredibly friendly, the music is
calming and of course the pedicures are heavenly. I’ve been going to this spa for over 12
years, there’s nowhere else in the city that compares in terms of atmosphere
and quality. As with any successful
business it’s the people that make this place great.

Day Sixty-Seven
I seem to have missed some days again. My apologies.
Since the weather has turned cold again, I thought I would take the opportunity to show off one of the results of having a poorly insulated old house in the Glebe in Winter - icicles.
I love to look at them and have never been so unlucky as to get hit by one.
This house intrigues me and I will do a post about it someday.
This was on the Ecclesiax church on Monk Street. It looks like there is a cross imbedded in it - a sign?

Day Sixty-Six
Down at Lansdowne in the Aberdeen Pavilion until the end of the month there is a sample light rail car. Pretty neat!
There is also a vintage bus on display.

Day Sixty-Five
Also on the weekend, the whole family took a walk to the Mayfair Theater just over the Bank Street Bridge in Old Ottawa South. Since the theatre is outside the Glebe, I thought I would show off the bridge.
As a kid, I used to stand on the bridge to see bits of events and concerts in the stadium. Maybe my kids will do the same.
It also has nice views of the Canal!
The Mayfair is a really cool theater - oldest one left in the city would be my guess. It is very ornate inside. I highly recommend it!

Day Sixty-Four
Later in the day on Saturday, while Ian was off enjoying a birthday party, Owen and I walked up to Bank Street for the Saint Patrick's Day parade.
When I was a kid, all the parades used to run through the Glebe along Bank Street to Lansdowne. Over time, they have all taken on new routes. Maybe with the changes at Lansdowne they will come back!

Day Sixty-Three
When I started doing this, one of the things I knew I would post about was the Glebe Barber.
Nabil came to Canada a long time ago. His father told him that learning to cut hair would be a useful skill.
Now it is how he makes his living. Along with his wife (who also works), he has raised two amazing young women and become a fixture in the neighbourhood.
He is an amazing guy and I am lucky to have him cut my (and my boy's) hair!
The Glebe barbershop is unique in many ways. It is throwback to the barbershops of yor.
But it is also uniquer in the wall coverings. The walls are covered in international currency. Not enough to be worth breaking in for, but a lot of fun to look at!
This one shows Nabil trimming and blowdrying an early PM.

Day Sixty-One
Last night, just for fun, I met up with a friend for a pint. I don't get out nearly as often as I used to but every once in a while it is awfully nice.
We met at Pints & Quarts on Bank Street. I had my first drink in a bar there, back when it was called Noddy's. After that it was the 5:15, then the Royal Oak and now Pints & Quarts.
They had a few nice beers to choose from and we enjoyed a glass of Kitchissippi 1855. Very tasty!

Day Sixty
So you can't see it when the water is in, but on the South East part of Brown's Inlet there is this pipe. I don't know what it is for, but I expect it might be for storm run off. If anyone knows please let me know in the comments.
Day Fifty-Nine
So things are melting. Fast. I was intending to showcase more ice surfaces (especially the rink at Glendale which gets no respect) but I guess I have run out of time.
This rink is on Brown's Inlet. I met the mad who was making it. He has done it for years off and on. He had a great system. Big garbage cans on a sled that he poured water into through a net to get rid of solids. It is a very popular spot for pick up hockey.
There are even improvised lights.
And seating.

Day Fifty-Eight
My dad makes the boys a little rink in the backyard every winter. They played for a bit this morning before school. I love all the little rinks that appear each winter in the Glebe.

Day Fifty-Six
It was a glorious day today. Warm, sunny and relaxing. I spent a lot of time both outside and in playing with my youngest son who is slowly getting over strep throat.
One of the highlights was digging out my charcoal bbq to grill some steak for dinner.
After dinner I took a walk up to Bank Street and picked up a few things at Metro. Metro is a grocery store but to me it is still the IGA. That is what it was when I was a kid. Eventually it was rebranded as a LOEB and is now a Metro, but to me it is still the IGA I shopped at as a kid with my mom.
It has a lot going of it as a grocery store given its small footprint. It has good quality meat compared to most other big name stores. For me though, it is convenient and familiar, the place I often stop on the way home from work for dinner fixings.

Day Fifty-Four
One thing that I have learned in the last few months is that careful attention will reveal detail not otherwise appreciated. I though I had been paying attention but I noticed this just down the street for the first time the other day. Either I missed it or it was covered in snow, either way it made me happy.

Day Fifty-Three
I get around the neighbourhood a lot. Sometimes though, I guess I miss things. As Owen and I were walking around on the weekend we came across this lovely new house at Second Avenue and Chrysler Street. I have no recollection of its construction. Very nice house though!

Day Fifty-Two
When we were walking on the weekend, a neighbour pointed out this street light - that stays on all the time. I thought that was funny. So you get to see it too.

Day Fifty- One (Belated)
Hello,
So things over the past week or so have conspired to keep me from my daily post. After a lot of thought, I have decided to continue posting daily and extend the end date of the project until we hit 365 days.
This weekend I was blessed to have the company of my seven year-old son on two photo walks around the Glebe. Watch for some of his photos to be included in the coming days!
On Sunday I cooked roast pork. My digital meat thermometer broke recently and so Owen and I stopped in at J. D. Adam - one of two amazing cooking stores in the Glebe. A minute later I had a new old school meat thermometer and we had a wonderful meal.
